Arlington, VA -- Child Care Aware® of America is celebrating the one-year anniversary of the Let’s Move! Child Care initiative, a partnership that provides tools and resources to promote healthy eating and exercise in family child care homes and centers.
Launched in June 2011, the campaign was an outgrowth of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! initiative, which is dedicated to solving the challenge of childhood obesity within a generation.
Child Care Aware® of America has supported the goals of the campaign in several ways, and interest among the child care provider community has been robust. In May, the Child Care Aware Training Academy™ and partner Smart Horizons offered a free online Physical Activity and Nutrition course to celebrate Provider Appreciation Day, which recognizes child care providers, teachers and other educators of young children each year on the Friday before Mother’s Day. More than 4,300 people enrolled in the course, which focused on the causes of childhood obesity and how providers can most effectively address them in a child care setting through active play and nutritional meal planning.
The 2-hour course is also available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year at the Child Care Aware Training Academy™ website: http://naccrra.smarthorizons.org .
Also last month, Rhode Island and Idaho were announced as the winners of the Let’s Move! Child Care State Challenge, a nationwide competition launched by Child Care Aware® of America and the Administration for Children and Families. The Challenge recognized those states that had the highest participation in the Let’s Move! Child Care initiative. Overall, more than 7,000 providers are participating.
In March, more than 1,300 trainers and child care providers registered for “Let’s Move! Child Care: Tools & Resources for Success,” an installment of Child Care Aware® of America’s six-part Let’s Move! Child Care webinar series. The webinar focused on the tools and resources available to help providers successfully meet the five Let’s Move! Child Care goal areas – Physical Activity, Screen Time, Food, Beverages and Infant Feeding – and earn the Provider Recognition Award.
“The Let’s Move! Child Care collaboration has empowered child care providers to be champions for healthier choices,” said Ollie M. Smith, Interim Executive Director of Child Care Aware® of America. “Our organization is proud to be part of this initiative, and we are keeping up the fight against childhood obesity.”
