ARLINGTON, Va. -- Nearly 200 child care providers have signed up to participate in Health Aware, a wellness expo designed to engage child care professionals with industry experts who can help them develop high-quality healthy eating and physical activity programs for children.

This is the first Health Aware, to be held April 11 during Child Care Aware® of America’s Policy Symposium. Providers from programs large and small, including child development centers, preschools, family child care homes and faith-based child care facilities, have registered to attend.

“We are delighted that so many providers have demonstrated a commitment to healthy child care,” said Lynette M. Fraga, Ph.D., Executive Director of Child Care Aware® of America. “Our hope is that Health Aware empowers child care providers to be champions for healthier choices and leaders in the fight against childhood obesity.”

Held at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill, the expo will feature health and nutrition experts from Nemours, Let’s Move! Child Care, FoodSourceand other organizations and demonstrations from sponsors like SoyNut Butter. Highlighting the event are two 60-minute trainings – “Learning to Move and Moving to Learn” and “Making Nutrition FUN!” – conducted by Dr. Linda Carson, founder and CEO of Choosy Kids, LLC, a company devoted to developing healthy preferences early in life. Training participants will be awarded clock hours.

Health Aware attendees will also enjoy healthy snacks, receive a one-year membership in Child Care Aware® of America and have the opportunity to win prizes and giveaways.

This “fee-free” offering for providers comes just a month before Provider Appreciation Day on May 10, which recognizes child care providers, teachers and other educators of young children everywhere. In June, Child Care Aware® of America will celebrate the two-year anniversary of the Let’s Move! Child Care initiative, a partnership that provides tools and resources to promote healthy eatingand exercise in family child care homes and centers.
