Comprehensive Background Checks
There's a lot happening with background checks for child care providers. On September 13, 2011, GAO released a study that found sex offenders in child care programs, partly due to differing background check requirements in states. On September 28, 2011, the Office of Child Care (OCC), Administration for Children and Families of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released an Information Memorandum recommending that states conduct comprehensive background checks on all child care providers paid with funding from the Child Care Development Fund (CCDF) and that comprehensive background checks be incorporated for all providers caring for children as part of state licensing standards.
These releases are a huge victory but our work is not done. Below are resources to learn more about various policies affecting background checks.
