Pyramid Passing - Soccer Skill Development
[20 Minutes]
Soccer is a great game and September is the month to start developing your child's skills. One of the most important skills in soccer is passing the ball. Remind your child this is done with feet - not hands - so keep hands away and let feet do the passing - PYRAMID STYLE!
You'll need:
1 roll of colored tape that will show on the grass (like electrical tape or border tape)
a large open grassy area - level and free from obstacles
1 soccer ball
sneakers or soccer cleats
shorts and comfortable t-shirt
How to play:
- Together with your child, choose a grassy area - check for any potential hazards or obstacles and resolve them.
- When you're ready, help your child make your pyramid which is essentially a large triangle on the ground. Be sure you can see the tape so you can follow the pyramid as an outline for your passes. This can be as large or as small as you like, however, be sure it's large enough to do at least 4 different length passes back and forth.
- Outside of your pyramid - practice passing the ball. Passing is a way to share the ball to achieve the team's goal of scoring a goal!
- Ask your child to show you some of her soccer passing and dribbling skills. You can show her yours, too!
- Now you can start on your passing pyramid! Start at the top of the pyramid - the most narrow part, to practice short fast passes. Do 2 or 3 back and forth.
- Now, move to the next wider portion of your pyramid and do the same. Do this until you reach the base, then work your way back up again.
- Create a new pyramid that's bigger or work the original one with some creativity. Dribble along all three sides, pass fast, pass slow, pass with a front kick or the inside of your foot. Do it all! Have Fun!
Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.
- How do you like using your feet to pass a ball? What did you like most about working the pyramid?
- What was the easiest for you? The hardest?
