Parent leaders: Betsy Cummings, a Virginia parent leader who participated in the Parents @ Symposium program in 2011, has been active in helping move legislation aimed at improving the quality of child care for all children. Stephanie Serafini, is another Virginia parent leader who participated in Parents @ Symposium, and was featured in the CNN Money report about the cost of child care. Susana Coro is an Assistant Teacher at the Falls Church-McLean Children's Center. Most recently, Susana testified before the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Subcommittee on Children and Families about the need for quality, affordable child care. Elly Lafkin is a parent from Virginia who is advocating for comprehensive background checks. Elly was featured in a front page Washington Post article about the inadequacy of commercial background checks, which she only found out about after the death of her baby daughter in a child care program. Her provider had numerous aliases, which were not revealed through commercial screening.
