Many parents assume that background checks are required for licensed child care providers, but this is not always the case. And, state background check requirements vary greatly.
Child Care Aware® of America has posted a one-page summary about why background checks are important to ensure the safety of children. The summary also presents information about state background check requirements and makes recommendations to strengthen the law. Also posted are two state-by-state tables showing individual state requirements for child care centers and family child care homes (such as whether or not a state uses fingerprints as part of its background check process, checks the child abuse registry, and the sex offender registry).
Legislation is pending in Congress to require comprehensive background checks for all licensed child care providers and for those providers who receive CCDBG subsidies to care for unrelated children.
