Based on key competency areas of the Child Development Associate (CDA) credential, NACCRRA's Child Care Essentials: A Comprehensive Initial Training is a self-paced 40-hour online course which covers an extensive range of child care topics, including: preparing a secure environment for children, adapting to the unique characteristics of each child and partnering with parents. Between September 2010 and February 2011, more than 500 child care professionals in five states participated in a pilot of Child Care Essentials. Participants who completed the pilot phase gained the skills needed to create an inclusive, nurturing learning environment for children. Eighty-six percent of participants found the course to be an effective learning tool for providers beginning their careers in child care and 94percent of participants preferred the online training method as it allows for them to work at their own pace.
